Irvine-based Taco Bell enters the morning breakfast wars Thursday armed with a waffle taco mashup and a costly advertising strategy aimed at bolstering its entrance into a $31 billion eating segment.

The ultimate national menu, which was tried for two years in Southern Colorado, includes an A.M. Crunchwrap, breakfast burritos, Cinnabon Pleasures, breakfast tacos, a hash brown and a flatbread melt with sausage. The showstopper is just a $1.99 egg-stuffed waffle taco coated in syrup.

“There exists a sea of sameness out there. We are wanting to move up people's morning schedule,” Chief Marketing Official Joe Brandt said.

Objects vary from $1 to $2.99, priced below or within selection of other national people such as for example Subway, McDonald's and Starbucks.

Move up or move down?

Taco Bell began preliminary testing of breakfast seven years back, using its time to come up with a final menu worthy to compete in a field of solid players. While the Egg McMuffin ($3.19) may be the reigning master of fast-food breakfast, Taco Bell believes it has a solid challenger in the A.M. Crunchwrap and the Waffle Taco. The A.M. Crunchwrap is $2.49 (with bacon or sausage), or $2.99 with steak.

The hexagon-shaped crunchwrap comes with a grilled tortilla loaded with scrambled eggs, a hash brown patty, dissolved cheese and a selection of bacon, sausage or steak.

“It truly is every thing you love about breakfast,” Brandt said.

The waffle taco took the national highlight this past year following an Lime State person with significantly less than 100 Instagram fans placed the “key food test” on her behalf page. The post gone viral.

From then on, “every one needed a waffle taco,” claimed Adrienne Berkes, Taco Bell's director of brand marketing.

Competitor rates

Most breakfast sandwiches at McDonald's price $2.79 to $3.39; Subway: $2.50 to $2.75 (small sandwiches); and Starbucks: $2.95 to $4.45.

Table techniques

Taco Bell's breakfast hours will soon be 7 to 11 a.m. – about a half-hour later than McDonald's. Last month, McDonald's hinted it will extend its breakfast hours. In the meantime, 112 San Diego eateries are testing raspberry and treatment cheese pastries, at a cost of 2 for $1.99 or $2.19.

Port in the Package, which serves breakfast 24 hours, is offering egg-stuffed croissants for just two for $3.50 for a limited time. On April 3, Mexican fast-food rival Del Taco will add a fresh range of breakfast tacos. Price: 75 dollars to $1.75.

Early reviews

A Taco Bell in Lime published a “break eat” critique Friday for Register readers. About 40 supporters tried the waffle taco, the A.M. Crunchwrap and egg burritos.

Many claimed these were remarkably pleased with the waffle taco, and insisted it be enjoyed with syrup.

“It was fairly boring with no syrup,” Laurie Klinkert, 64, of Lime said. It also expected “a lot of napkins” because it absolutely was a little fatty, she added.

Neal McAuley, 50 of Santa Ana was ambivalent: “It was an alternative texture. Not bad.”
